Europe by the numbers

Europe has 46 countries, a combined population of about 742,396,506 โ€” roughly 9.3% of everyone on Earth โ€” across 23,173,375 square kilometres. That works out at 32.0 people per square kilometre against a world average of 59.4.

  • Average density: 32.0 people per kmยฒ
  • Most populous: Russia (144,713,314)
  • Largest by area: Russia (17,098,242 kmยฒ)
  • Most densely populated: Monaco (18,235 per kmยฒ)
  • Least densely populated: Iceland (3.6 per kmยฒ)

The biggest and the smallest

By population the five largest are Russia (144,713,314), Germany (83,369,843), United Kingdom (66,971,395), France (64,626,628) and Italy (59,037,474).

The smallest by population are Vatican City (825), San Marino (33,660) and Monaco (36,469) โ€” and those are exactly the ones people forget when trying to name every country on the continent.

By land area the order is different: Russia, France, Ukraine, Spain and Sweden lead, while Vatican City, Monaco and San Marino are the smallest. Population and area rankings rarely agree, and noticing where they diverge is one of the fastest ways to build a real feel for a continent rather than a list of names.

Languages and currencies

The most widely used official languages here are German (6 countries), French (5 countries), Italian (4 countries), Serbian (3 countries) and English (3 countries).

Several countries share a currency: EUR, used by 26 and CHF, used by 2. Shared currencies usually mark a monetary union or a long-standing peg, and they are worth knowing because one answer often unlocks several.

Learn Europe properly

Working one continent at a time beats shuffling the whole world, because your memory for places is spatial and neighbouring countries reinforce each other. For Europe the three angles worth covering are the map, the flags and the capitals.

Do all three for the same continent before moving on. Each one reinforces the other two, which is far more efficient than learning flags globally, then capitals globally, then the map globally.
