Why this list is shorter than you expect
Many Caribbean islands are not independent countries. Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands belong to the United States; Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten are part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands; Martinique and Guadeloupe are French regions; the Cayman Islands, Turks and Caicos, Anguilla and the British Virgin Islands are British overseas territories. Quizzes that ask for "Caribbean countries" usually mean the 13 above.
The classic mix-ups
- Dominica vs the Dominican Republic: two different countries. Dominica is a small island in the Lesser Antilles (capital Roseau); the Dominican Republic shares Hispaniola with Haiti (capital Santo Domingo).
- Kingston vs Kingstown: Kingston is Jamaica's capital; Kingstown, with a t, is Saint Vincent and the Grenadines'.
- Saint John's vs Saint George's: Antigua and Barbuda vs Grenada.
- Port-au-Prince vs Port of Spain: Haiti vs Trinidad and Tobago.
How to remember them
Go from big to small. The Greater Antilles hold the four big ones — Cuba (Havana), Jamaica (Kingston), Haiti (Port-au-Prince) and the Dominican Republic (Santo Domingo). The Bahamas (Nassau) sit to the north. Then work down the Lesser Antilles chain from north to south: Saint Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Barbados (a little to the east), Grenada and finally Trinidad and Tobago just off Venezuela.
