- Brunei → Bandar Seri Begawan
- Cambodia → Phnom Penh
- Indonesia → Jakarta (a new capital, Nusantara, is being built on Borneo)
- Laos → Vientiane
- Malaysia → Kuala Lumpur (the government sits in nearby Putrajaya)
- Myanmar → Naypyidaw
- Philippines → Manila
- Singapore → Singapore (a city-state)
- Thailand → Bangkok
- Timor-Leste → Dili
- Vietnam → Hanoi
The ones people get wrong
- Myanmar: Naypyidaw, not Yangon. The government moved to the purpose-built capital in 2005–2006; Yangon (Rangoon) is still the largest city.
- Vietnam: Hanoi, not Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), which is larger.
- Malaysia: Kuala Lumpur is the capital; Putrajaya is the administrative centre where most ministries sit.
- Brunei: Bandar Seri Begawan is the longest name on the list — worth learning by sound: BAN-dar SEH-ree beh-GAH-wan.
How to remember them
Mainland first, left to right: Myanmar (Naypyidaw), Thailand (Bangkok), Laos (Vientiane), Cambodia (Phnom Penh), Vietnam (Hanoi). Then the peninsula and islands: Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur), Singapore, Brunei (Bandar Seri Begawan), Indonesia (Jakarta), the Philippines (Manila) and Timor-Leste (Dili). The mainland capitals sit on or near big rivers — the Mekong for Vientiane and Phnom Penh, the Chao Phraya for Bangkok, the Red River for Hanoi.
