Asian Flags Quiz

Flags from across Asia.

Flags from across Asia โ€” the most visually varied continent on the board, and the one where colour-family shortcuts help least.

Why Asian flags are their own problem

Europe rewards pattern recognition because so much of it is tricolours. Africa rewards it because so much of it is Pan-African colours. Asia does neither. It spans Pan-Arab flags in the west, crescent-and-star flags through the centre, and a set of East and Southeast Asian designs that follow no shared template at all.

That means fewer shortcuts, but also fewer lookalike traps. Most Asian flags, once learned, stay learned.

Break it into four regions

West Asia and the Gulf is the Pan-Arab block โ€” red, white, black and green. Jordan, Palestine, Kuwait, the UAE, Iraq, Syria and Yemen all draw on the same four colours. Learn the arrangements: Yemen is three plain horizontal bands, Syria and Iraq add stars or script, the UAE puts a vertical red band at the hoist, and Jordan and Palestine add a hoist triangle with Jordan carrying a white star in it.

Central Asia is the -stan block, and it is where scores go to die. Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan are unfamiliar to most people and share no palette. Worth deliberate study: Kazakhstan is a golden sun and eagle on sky blue, Kyrgyzstan a red field with a yellow sun, Turkmenistan green with an elaborate carpet stripe โ€” the most intricate national flag in the world.

South Asia โ€” India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, the Maldives. This block contains the two most distinctive flags on Earth: Nepal, the only non-rectangular national flag, and Bhutan, with its dragon. Free points.

East and Southeast Asia โ€” Japan, China, Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and their neighbours. Mostly red-dominant, mostly with a central or cantoned emblem.

The traps that exist

  • Indonesia and Monaco โ€” red over white. Monaco is squarer. And Poland is the inverse.
  • Malaysia and the United States โ€” both red and white stripes with a blue canton. Malaysia's canton holds a crescent and a star; there are 14 stripes, not 13.
  • Georgia and England โ€” both a red cross on white; Georgia adds four smaller crosses in the quarters.
  • China and Vietnam โ€” both red with yellow stars. Vietnam has one large star; China has one large and four small.

The two everyone should know

Nepal is not a rectangle. It is two stacked triangular pennants, and it is the only national flag in the world shaped that way. If a quiz includes it, it is the easiest point on the board.

Turkmenistan has the most detailed national flag anywhere โ€” a vertical stripe carrying five carpet guls, each representing a tribe. You will never confuse it with anything else.

Where to go next

If Asian flags are landing, the Asian Capitals quiz covers the same countries and is the more useful half for most people, because capital recall is what general knowledge quizzes actually ask for.

Frequently asked questions

How many countries are in Asia?

Around 48 to 49 depending on how the Europe-Asia boundary is drawn and how transcontinental states such as Turkey and Russia are counted. It is the largest continent by both area and population.

Which Asian flag is the hardest to remember?

Most people struggle with the Central Asian states โ€” Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. They share no colour family with each other, so there is no pattern to lean on and each has to be learned individually.

Why is Nepal's flag not a rectangle?

It is two stacked pennants, a shape descended from the triangular banners historically flown in the region. It is the only non-rectangular national flag in the world, and its proportions are defined by a precise geometric construction written into Nepal's constitution.

What are the Pan-Arab colours?

Red, white, black and green. They appear across West Asia and North Africa โ€” in the flags of Jordan, Palestine, Kuwait, the UAE, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Egypt and Sudan among others โ€” and are usually traced to the banner of the Arab Revolt.
