How the African flags quiz works
A flag appears, you name the country. Africa is the best continent to start flag practice on, because so many of its flags share a small set of colours and symbols — once you learn the rules, dozens of flags follow the same logic.
The Pan-African colours
Red, gold and green come from the flag of Ethiopia, the one African country never colonised in the late nineteenth-century partition. Many nations adopted those colours at independence, so you will see them again and again: Ghana, Senegal, Mali, Guinea, Cameroon, Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso, Congo, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe and more.
Once you know the family, the job becomes telling family members apart:
- Mali, Senegal, Guinea, Cameroon — all three vertical bands of green, yellow and red or its reverse. Senegal adds a green star, Cameroon a yellow star, Guinea has no emblem, and Mali's order is green-yellow-red left to right.
- Ghana — horizontal red, gold, green with a black star.
- Ethiopia — green, yellow, red horizontal with a blue disc and star.
Distinctive flags you can learn instantly
- Kenya — Maasai shield and spears.
- Eswatini — a shield laid horizontally.
- Mozambique — the only national flag with a modern rifle on it.
- Seychelles — five rays fanning from the corner.
- South Africa — the green Y shape, unmistakable.
- Egypt — the golden Eagle of Saladin.
- Libya — plain red, black and green with a star and crescent.
- Somalia — a single white star on light blue.
