Country Silhouette Quiz

Identify a country from its outline.

Identify a country from its outline alone β€” no colours, no labels, no neighbours. The purest test of map knowledge there is.

Why shapes are worth learning

Shape recognition is what map quizzes, geography bees and GeoGuessr-style games actually test. It is also the most durable form of geographic memory: once you can recognise Chile, you recognise it for life.

The catch is that shape recognition is all-or-nothing. You either see it instantly or you have nothing to reason from, which makes this one of the more frustrating quizzes until it suddenly clicks.

The unmistakable ones

Learn these first. They are free points and they act as anchors for everything else:

  • Chile β€” an extremely long, thin ribbon. Nothing else looks like it.
  • Italy β€” the boot.
  • Norway β€” a long jagged coastline with a tail curling east.
  • Vietnam β€” a narrow S.
  • India β€” a broad triangle pointing south.
  • Japan β€” an arc of islands.
  • New Zealand β€” two main islands, one long and one squat.
  • Sri Lanka β€” a teardrop.
  • Madagascar β€” a large oval island off Africa.
  • Chad β€” distinctive angular borders.
  • Somalia β€” the horn.

The blocks that cause trouble

The rectangles of Africa. Colonial borders were often drawn with a ruler, so Egypt, Libya, Algeria, Mali, Niger, Sudan and Chad all present as angular blocks. The fix is relative size and which corner the odd angles sit in, not outline alone.

The stans. Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan interlock in shapes most people have never studied. Uzbekistan is the one that wraps awkwardly around its neighbours.

Small European states. Below a certain size everything is a blob. Luxembourg, Slovenia, Montenegro and North Macedonia are hard by shape alone and are better learned by position.

West African coastal strips. Togo, Benin, Ghana and CΓ΄te d'Ivoire are all narrow north-south strips on the same stretch of coast. Their relative widths are the only shape information available.

How to actually learn shapes

Do not stare at a country trying to memorise it. Find one feature and name it out loud.

  • Italy has a heel and a toe.
  • Somalia has a horn.
  • Norway has a fjorded edge and a hook.
  • Oman has a detached piece at the tip of the peninsula.
  • Croatia is a boomerang wrapping around Bosnia.
  • Gambia is a sliver following a river, entirely surrounded by Senegal except at the coast.

A named feature is retrievable. A remembered picture usually is not.

Where to go next

Click the Country on the Map gives you the country name and asks you to find it in context, which is the complementary skill β€” this quiz strips the context away entirely, so the two together cover both halves.

Frequently asked questions

Which country is easiest to recognise by shape?

Chile, by a wide margin β€” an extremely long, narrow ribbon down the west coast of South America that resembles nothing else on the map. Italy's boot and Somalia's horn are the next most distinctive.

Why do so many African countries have straight borders?

Because many were drawn by European powers during the colonial period using lines of latitude and longitude rather than rivers, mountains or existing boundaries. The result is a set of countries that look like angular blocks and are hard to tell apart by outline alone.

Which country surrounds another country?

Several do. Senegal almost entirely surrounds The Gambia, which follows the Gambia River inland. South Africa completely surrounds Lesotho, and Italy completely surrounds both San Marino and Vatican City.

How do I get better at recognising country shapes?

Name a feature rather than memorising a picture. Italy has a heel and a toe; Somalia has a horn; Croatia is a boomerang around Bosnia. A named feature can be retrieved under pressure in a way that a remembered image usually cannot.
