Borders Quiz
Find a country that shares a continent (and likely a border) with the target.
Which countries border which? Builds the adjacency map that lets you reconstruct a region you have half-forgotten.
Why borders are worth learning separately
Knowing where a country is gets you a point. Knowing what it touches gets you the whole neighbourhood, because adjacency is how memory for places actually chains together. People who can reel off a continent are almost always walking a border chain rather than reciting a list.
The record holders
China and Russia each border fourteen countries, more than anywhere else in the world. Brazil borders every South American country except Chile and Ecuador — which is the single most useful fact about South American geography, because it means almost any South American border question involving Brazil is a yes.
France has more land borders than most people expect once its overseas departments are counted, including one with Brazil via French Guiana.
The surprising pairs
These come up constantly because they sound wrong:
- Russia and North Korea share a short border.
- Spain and Morocco share land borders at Ceuta and Melilla.
- Denmark and Germany — Denmark's only land border.
- China and Afghanistan meet along a narrow corridor.
- Italy surrounds San Marino and Vatican City completely.
- South Africa surrounds Lesotho completely.
Countries with only one neighbour
A short, quiz-friendly list: Portugal borders only Spain, Denmark only Germany, Canada only the United States, South Korea only North Korea, Ireland only the United Kingdom, Qatar only Saudi Arabia, and The Gambia only Senegal.
Countries with none
Island nations have no land borders at all, which is the mirror image and worth knowing when a question is phrased negatively.
How to practise
Pick a country and try to name every neighbour before checking. Then pick one of those neighbours and repeat. Chaining outward like that builds a connected map rather than isolated facts, and it is the single most effective drill for the "name every country in a region" format.
Frequently asked questions
Which country has the most neighbours?
China and Russia are tied at fourteen land borders each, more than any other country. Brazil leads in South America, bordering every country on the continent except Chile and Ecuador.
Which countries have only one neighbour?
Portugal borders only Spain, Denmark only Germany, Canada only the United States, South Korea only North Korea, Ireland only the United Kingdom, Qatar only Saudi Arabia, and The Gambia only Senegal.
Do Russia and North Korea share a border?
Yes, a short one in the far east near the Tumen River. It surprises people because the two countries are rarely pictured as neighbours, which is exactly why it appears in quizzes.
How does learning borders help with geography quizzes?
Adjacency is how spatial memory chains together. People who can name every country in a region are usually walking a border chain rather than recalling a list, so practising borders directly builds the structure the other quizzes depend on.
