How the countries of the world quiz works

Questions come in three kinds, in turn: which continent a country is in, which of four countries is in a given continent, and which of four is not in it. Easy plays the 60 most populous countries, Medium 110, Hard 150 and Expert every country in the quiz, micro-states and Pacific islands included. After each answer you see the country's continent and capital.

These are the 185 countries the quiz asks about. Twelve more are left out on purpose, because they sit on two continents or are placed either way by different atlases: Russia, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia, Cyprus, Egypt, Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Panama and Trinidad and Tobago. A question about them would have two right answers.

The countries people place on the wrong continent

Suriname and Guyana are in South America, though they look Caribbean. French Guiana, next door, is part of France, not a country.
Mongolia is in Asia, between Russia and China.
Papua New Guinea is in Oceania, though it shares an island with Indonesia.
The Caribbean islands, Cuba to Grenada, are all North America, as is Central America from Guatemala to Costa Rica.
Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles and Comoros are African island countries in the Indian Ocean.
Israel, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria are in Asia (the Middle East is a region of Asia).
Iceland and Malta are in Europe.

Frequently asked questions

Which continent has the most countries?

Africa, with 54 countries. Europe and Asia come next, and the exact count for each depends on where Russia, Turkey and the Caucasus countries are placed.

Why are Russia and Turkey not in the quiz?

Both lie partly in Europe and partly in Asia, so a question asking for one continent would have two right answers. The same goes for Kazakhstan, Egypt, Indonesia and the others listed above.

Is Central America a continent?

No. Central America and the Caribbean are part of North America, so Guatemala, Cuba and Jamaica are all North American countries.

Is the Middle East a continent?

No, it is a region. Most Middle Eastern countries, such as Saudi Arabia, Iran and Israel, are in Asia; Egypt is mostly in Africa.
