European Countries Quiz
Name every country in Europe against the clock.
Name every country in Europe — the smallest major continent by area, the densest by country count, and the one where the boundary itself is arguable.
How many countries is it actually?
There is no single right answer, and this is the main reason quizzes disagree with each other.
The count depends on three things: where you draw the Europe–Asia boundary, whether you count transcontinental states like Russia and Turkey, and how you treat partially recognised states such as Kosovo. Most quizzes land somewhere between 44 and 50.
If a quiz's total does not match what you expected, that is usually why rather than an error.
Work it in blocks
Western Europe — familiar to almost everyone and rarely the problem.
The Nordics — Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland. A tidy block of five.
Central Europe — Germany, Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, Austria, Hungary, Switzerland, Liechtenstein.
The Baltics — Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania. They run north to south in alphabetical order, which is one of the few places alphabetical order helps.
The Balkans — Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Albania, Kosovo, Bulgaria, Romania, Greece. The block where nearly everyone's score collapses, and the one worth dedicated study.
The microstates — Monaco, San Marino, Vatican City, Andorra, Liechtenstein, Malta. Easy to forget entirely, and they account for six answers.
The ones people always miss
Moldova, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Kosovo, Andorra, San Marino, Liechtenstein, Malta and Luxembourg. Almost every incomplete list is missing several of these, and between them they are a substantial chunk of the total.
The transcontinental cases
Russia, Turkey and Kazakhstan all span the Europe–Asia boundary. Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan sit near the Caucasus line and are assigned either way depending on the source. Cyprus is geographically closer to Asia and is usually grouped with Europe politically.
None of these has a correct answer — they are conventions, and different quizzes pick differently.
Where to go next
European Capitals and European Flags cover the same countries from two other angles. Doing all three for Europe before moving on is far more efficient than learning countries globally, then flags globally, then capitals.
Frequently asked questions
How many countries are in Europe?
Between 44 and 50 depending on where the Europe–Asia boundary is drawn, whether transcontinental states such as Russia and Turkey are counted, and how partially recognised states such as Kosovo are treated. There is no single correct figure.
Which European countries do people forget most?
Moldova, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Kosovo and the microstates — Andorra, San Marino, Liechtenstein, Malta and Monaco. Almost every incomplete list is missing several of them.
Is Russia in Europe or Asia?
Both. Russia spans the conventional Europe–Asia boundary along the Ural Mountains, with most of its population in the European portion and most of its land area in Asia. Turkey and Kazakhstan are similarly transcontinental.
What is the smallest country in Europe?
Vatican City, which is also the smallest country in the world. Monaco, San Marino, Liechtenstein, Malta and Andorra follow, and all six are frequently forgotten when naming every European country.
