Oceania Flags Quiz
Flags of Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific.
Flags of Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific island nations โ the smallest continent block and the one most people score worst on.
Why Oceania is quietly difficult
There are only fourteen sovereign states here, so it should be easy. It is not, for two reasons. Most people have never looked at a Pacific island flag in their lives, and the two they do know โ Australia and New Zealand โ are near-twins.
Australia against New Zealand
Both are blue fields with a Union Jack in the canton and the Southern Cross. The differences:
- New Zealand โ four stars, red with white outlines.
- Australia โ six stars, all white. Five form the Southern Cross and the sixth, much larger, sits below the canton as the Commonwealth Star.
Count the stars and check the colour. That is the entire distinction, and it settles a surprising number of quiz questions.
New Zealand held a referendum on changing its flag and voted to keep it, so the confusion is here to stay.
The Union Jack block
Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Tuvalu all carry the Union Jack. Fiji's field is a light sky blue with a shield; Tuvalu's is a lighter blue with nine yellow stars arranged to mirror the actual geography of its islands โ one of the few flags that is also a map.
The island nations worth learning individually
- Papua New Guinea โ split diagonally, black with the Southern Cross and red with a bird of paradise. One of the few national flags designed by a teenager, and genuinely striking.
- Palau โ a yellow disc slightly off-centre on light blue. Represents the moon, not the sun, and the off-centre placement is deliberate.
- Nauru โ a blue field with a thin gold horizontal stripe and a white twelve-pointed star below it. The stripe is the Equator and the star is the island's position just below it. A literal map.
- Kiribati โ a red sky with a gold frigatebird over a rising sun, above blue and white waves.
- Marshall Islands โ blue with two diagonal rays, orange and white, and a large star at the hoist.
- Solomon Islands โ blue and green split by a yellow diagonal, five white stars.
- Vanuatu โ a Y shape in black with a boar's tusk emblem.
- Samoa โ red with a blue canton and the Southern Cross.
- Tonga โ red with a red cross on a white canton.
- Micronesia โ light blue with four white stars.
The trick that makes this block stick
Several of these flags are literally geographic. Nauru's star sits below the Equator line because the island does. Tuvalu's nine stars are arranged in the shape of the actual island chain. Kiribati's waves and bird describe an ocean nation.
Once you know a flag is a map, you stop memorising it and start reading it.
Where to go next
Oceania Capitals is the natural pair and is harder โ Funafuti, Yaren, Melekeok, Majuro and Port Vila are rarely seen outside quizzes.
Frequently asked questions
How do you tell the Australian and New Zealand flags apart?
Count the stars and check their colour. New Zealand has four red stars with white outlines. Australia has six white stars โ five for the Southern Cross plus a larger Commonwealth Star beneath the Union Jack.
How many countries are in Oceania?
Fourteen sovereign states, including Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Fiji and the Pacific island nations. Many other Pacific territories are dependencies of other countries rather than independent, which is why counts vary between quizzes.
Which flag shows the Equator?
Nauru. The thin gold horizontal stripe represents the Equator and the white twelve-pointed star below it marks the island's position just south of it, with the points standing for the island's twelve tribes.
Which Pacific flags carry the Union Jack?
Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Tuvalu, all reflecting former British ties. Fiji has kept its Union Jack despite periodic proposals to remove it.
