US State Flags Quiz

All 50 state flags, including the new Utah and Minnesota flags of 2024. Hard mode asks the blue flags with a seal that everyone mixes up.

Fifty flags, and a good third of them are a state seal on a blue background. Name the state from its flag, from the easy ones like Texas and Alaska to the new Utah and Minnesota flags of 2024, then try Hard mode, where the wrong answers are the other blue seal flags.

How the state flags quiz works

You see a flag and pick the state that flies it. Every flag is the current official design. Easy rounds are mostly the distinctive flags and the wrong answers are random states. On Medium the wrong answers come from the same part of the country, and on Hard and Expert most rounds are the blue flags with a seal, offered alongside other blue seal flags. Expert gives six choices instead of four. Stuck? A hint tells you the state's region.

The flags that changed recently

  • Utah (2024): a beehive in a gold hexagon below snowy peaks, between blue and red bands. It replaced the seal on blue.
  • Minnesota (2024): a dark blue shape like the state with an eight-pointed North Star, beside a light blue field. It also replaced a seal on blue.
  • Mississippi (2021): a white magnolia in a ring of stars, replacing the 1894 flag that carried the Confederate battle emblem.

Telling the blue seal flags apart

The flags of Connecticut, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Vermont, Virginia and Wisconsin all put a seal or coat of arms on a blue field. Look for one detail in each:

  • Names written on the flag: KANSAS, MONTANA, WISCONSIN (with 1848) and STATE OF OREGON (with 1859) spell it out. South Dakota writes its name around a gold sunburst on a lighter sky blue.
  • Animals: Michigan has an elk and a moose, Pennsylvania two horses, Louisiana a pelican with her chicks, Maine a moose lying under a pine tree.
  • People: Kentucky shows two men shaking hands, Virginia a woman standing over a fallen tyrant, New York two women (Liberty and Justice), Wisconsin a sailor and a miner.
  • Odd ones out: Connecticut is a white shield with three grapevines, North Dakota an eagle with a banner, Nebraska a gold seal with a steamboat and a train.
