US State โ†’ Capital Quiz

Multiple choice: state to its capital.

Given a US state, name its capital. Multiple choice, all 50 states, and the trap fires more often than people expect โ€” most state capitals are not the biggest city.

Why state capitals are harder than country capitals

With countries, the capital is usually the largest and most famous city, so guessing the big name works most of the time. With US states it usually does not. The capital is far more often a smaller inland city chosen as a political compromise, and every instinct you have built from world geography actively works against you.

The exceptions list โ€” learn this and you have most of the quiz

These are the states where the capital is not the largest city, which is where essentially all quiz questions live:

  • New York โ€” Albany, not New York City.
  • California โ€” Sacramento, not Los Angeles.
  • Illinois โ€” Springfield, not Chicago.
  • Pennsylvania โ€” Harrisburg, not Philadelphia.
  • Florida โ€” Tallahassee, not Miami or Jacksonville.
  • Texas โ€” Austin, not Houston.
  • Washington โ€” Olympia, not Seattle.
  • Missouri โ€” Jefferson City, not Kansas City or St Louis.
  • Nevada โ€” Carson City, not Las Vegas.
  • Alaska โ€” Juneau, not Anchorage.
  • Michigan โ€” Lansing, not Detroit.
  • New Jersey โ€” Trenton, not Newark.
  • Maryland โ€” Annapolis, not Baltimore.
  • Kentucky โ€” Frankfort, not Louisville.
  • Oregon โ€” Salem, not Portland.
  • New Mexico โ€” Santa Fe, not Albuquerque.
  • Alabama โ€” Montgomery, not Birmingham.
  • South Dakota โ€” Pierre, not Sioux Falls.

The ones where the obvious answer is right

Worth knowing so you do not overthink them: Phoenix (Arizona), Denver (Colorado), Boston (Massachusetts), Atlanta (Georgia), Indianapolis (Indiana), Salt Lake City (Utah), Honolulu (Hawaii), Oklahoma City (Oklahoma), Little Rock (Arkansas), Boise (Idaho), Des Moines (Iowa), Columbus (Ohio), Nashville (Tennessee), Providence (Rhode Island), Cheyenne (Wyoming).

Second-guessing these costs people more points than the genuine traps do.

Why so many capitals are small cities

It was usually deliberate. Many states moved their capital inland in the nineteenth century to sit nearer the geographic centre of the population, to be defensible, or to avoid handing permanent political weight to a dominant commercial city. Albany, Harrisburg, Springfield and Jefferson City all come from that logic.

Knowing the reason helps, because it turns an arbitrary list into a pattern: when in doubt on a state with one dominant city, the capital is probably somewhere else.

Memory hooks that work

  • Carson City, Nevada and Jefferson City, Missouri โ€” both named after people, both small, both easy to confuse with somewhere bigger.
  • Annapolis, Maryland โ€” home of the Naval Academy, which is the hook.
  • Frankfort, Kentucky โ€” small enough that most people have never heard of it, which is itself memorable.
  • Pierre, South Dakota โ€” one of the least populous state capitals in the country.
  • Juneau, Alaska โ€” has no road connection to the rest of the state, reachable only by boat or plane. Genuinely unusual and therefore sticky.

Where to go next

US Capital to State runs the same material in reverse and is the harder direction. Name All US State Capitals drops the multiple choice entirely and asks you to produce all 50 from memory. To drill the big-city trap on its own, the US Capitals Quiz offers each capital next to its own state's largest cities.

Frequently asked questions

What is the capital of New York?

Albany. New York City is by far the larger city but has never been the state capital in the modern era โ€” Albany was chosen in 1797 and has held it since. This is the single most commonly missed state capital.

How many state capitals are the largest city in their state?

Only around seventeen. Phoenix, Denver, Boston, Atlanta, Indianapolis, Salt Lake City, Honolulu, Oklahoma City, Little Rock and a handful more. In the other two-thirds of states the capital is a smaller city, which is why guessing the famous name fails so often.

Which is the smallest US state capital?

Montpelier, Vermont, is the least populous state capital in the country. Pierre, South Dakota, and Augusta, Maine, are also among the smallest โ€” all well under 20,000 people, which is part of why they are so often missed.

Why is Juneau the capital of Alaska instead of Anchorage?

Juneau was established as the capital during the gold-rush era, long before Anchorage grew into the state's largest city. Proposals to move the capital have been voted on repeatedly and have never passed. Juneau has no road link to the rest of Alaska โ€” it is reachable only by boat or plane.
