How the Africa map quiz works

Africa has 54 sovereign countries recognised by the United Nations, which makes it the continent with the most countries. That is why it is the hardest continent map for most learners, and why it is worth breaking into regions.

Learn Africa region by region

North Africa (7) — Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Sudan, and Western Sahara as a disputed territory. A clean band across the top, easy to anchor first.

West Africa (16) — Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Burkina Faso and Cape Verde. This is where most people lose points: the coastal strip from Senegal to Nigeria packs ten small countries into a short curve. Learn them left to right along the coast, in order, like beads on a string.

Central Africa (9) — Chad, Central African Republic, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Angola. The two Congos are the classic trap: the Democratic Republic is the huge one, the Republic is the smaller one on the west coast.

East Africa (14) — Eritrea, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, South Sudan, plus the island nations of Madagascar, Comoros, Seychelles and Mauritius.

Southern Africa (8) — Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Eswatini and Lesotho. Lesotho sits entirely inside South Africa, and Eswatini is tucked into its eastern border — two answers people almost always forget.

The countries most people miss

Benin, Togo, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Djibouti, Eritrea, Burundi, Rwanda, Eswatini, Lesotho, Comoros and São Tomé and Príncipe. They are small, clustered, or easily confused with a similar-sounding neighbour. Drill those twelve on their own and your Africa score jumps immediately.

Landmarks that anchor the map

The Nile runs north through Sudan and Egypt — follow it to place both.
The Sahara covers most of the northern countries, so anything in the dry band is North or Sahel.
The Congo rainforest marks the centre of the continent.
The Horn of Africa is the pointed east coast: Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia.
Madagascar is the large island off the southeast coast — the reference point for the Indian Ocean nations.
