How the Middle East map quiz works

The map opens already zoomed on the region, and every country outside the quiz is greyed out, so nothing is too small to tap. We name a country; you click it. A miss highlights the right one before the next round, and the end screen lists the ones to practise.

The quiz covers 16 places: Turkey, Cyprus, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Iraq, Iran, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Yemen and Egypt. Bahrain is part of the region but is too small to draw on this map, so it appears in the Middle East capitals quiz instead.

A route that makes it stick

The big three first. Saudi Arabia covers most of the Arabian Peninsula, Iran sits east of the Persian Gulf, and Turkey bridges Europe and Asia in the north. Once those are fixed, everything else is placed relative to them.
The Mediterranean coast, north to south. Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, then Egypt. Cyprus is the island off that coast; Palestine is the West Bank and Gaza beside Israel.
The Gulf, top to bottom. Kuwait at the head of the Gulf, then Saudi Arabia's coast, the Qatar peninsula, the UAE, and Oman at the tip. Yemen fills the south-west corner of the peninsula.
What is left. Iraq between Syria and Iran; Jordan between Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Israel.

Common mix-ups

Qatar and the UAE. Qatar is the thumb-shaped peninsula; the UAE is the wider coastline further east.
Jordan and Syria. Syria touches the Mediterranean; Jordan only reaches the sea at Aqaba on the Red Sea.
Oman and Yemen. Oman holds the eastern tip of the peninsula; Yemen is the south-west.

Is Egypt in the Middle East?

Egypt is in Africa, but it is almost always grouped with the Middle East for history, language and politics, and its Sinai Peninsula is in Asia.
