The US Census Bureau's Midwest region has 12 states in two groups:

East North Central: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin
West North Central: Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota

Tips

Stack the Plains: North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, top to bottom.
Great Lakes states: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan (two peninsulas), Illinois, Indiana, Ohio.
Iowa and Missouri sit between the Plains stack and Illinois, with Iowa on top.
