The US Census Bureau's South region:
- South Atlantic: Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia (plus Washington, D.C., which is not a state)
- East South Central: Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi, Tennessee
- West South Central: Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Texas

Tips
- Delaware and Maryland surprise people — the Census counts both as Southern.
- The Gulf coast, west to east: Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida.
- Tennessee and Kentucky are the long east-west states north of Mississippi and Alabama.
