How the 50 states quiz works

Start the timer and type state names in any order. Do not learn them alphabetically. Your brain stores places by location, not by letter. Work region by region:

New England (6) — Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut. Small, clustered, easy to lock in as a block.
Mid-Atlantic (5) — New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland.
The South (12) — Virginia, West Virginia, North and South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas, Louisiana.
The Midwest (12) — Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas.
The Southwest and Mountain West (11) — Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, plus California on the coast.

The states people forget most

In practice the same handful go missing on almost every attempt:

Delaware and Rhode Island — tiny, easy to skip on a map.
The Dakotas — people get one and forget the other.
Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas — the middle blends together.
New Hampshire and Vermont — commonly swapped.
West Virginia — often assumed to be part of Virginia.
Alaska and Hawaii — off the main map, so out of sight.

Memory tricks that work

Chunk in threes. Three states at a time, said out loud, beats staring at a whole map.
Trace the border. Start at Maine, run down the Atlantic coast, along the Gulf, up the Pacific, then fill the middle. A physical route is easier to remember than a list.
Use shapes. Florida, Michigan, Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana all have outlines you can picture instantly. Anchor the neighbours to them.
Say the capital too. Learning "Boise, Idaho" as one unit gets you both facts for barely more effort.
Practise short and often. Five minutes a day beats an hour on Sunday, every time.
